Kunming Lake (Chinese: 昆明湖; pinyin: Kūn Míng Hú) is the central lake on the grounds of the Summer Palace in Beijing, China.

  • Because it's quite shallow (I was told by my guide no more than 1.5 meters at any given point), it freezes over quite thoroughly in the winter and lots of locals and visitors have fun skating here (whether on actual skates or just zooming about in their sneakers). It's really beautiful and a highlight of any tour to Beijing, particularly if you're from warmer climes and unaccustomed to frozen lakes that you can hike across.
  • This was my favourite place to visit when I was in Beijing in 1998-2000.
