Kennedy Family Compound (Barnstable, Massachusetts)

USA / Massachusetts / West Yarmouth / Barnstable, Massachusetts

The Kennedy 'Compound' consists of about 6 acres (24,000 m²) of various plots of property alongside Nantucket Sound in Hyannis Port, MA. It contains the waterfront home of Joseph P. and Rose Kennedy, the inland homes of two of his sons, Robert F. and John F., and the home of Robert F. Jr. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, John utilized the homes as a base for his Presidential campaign and his home as the summer White House and Presidential retreat until his assassination in 1963.

The main house was a smaller summer cottage built c.1904 and first rented by Joe and Rose Kennedy in 1926 (many of the homes were built by L. Frank Paine). Two years later they bought it and greatly enlarged it. In 1956, John purchased his home on Irving Ave and in 1961 Robert and Ethel bought their home in between the two, which Ethel still lives in. Ted Kennedy inherited the main house from his parents, and lived there until his death in 2009. Caroline Kennedy inherited the JFK house and sold it in 2005 to Ted, as he wanted to keep it in the family.

The family compound was profiled in the 2023 book "White House by the Sea: A Century of the Kennedys at Hyannis Port" by Kate Storey.

  • Ted may have had his faults, who doesn't, but he more than made up for them with his statesmanship abilities. He did good, indeed.
