archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages, historic ruins
A large archaeological site some 4 km west of the center of modern Alkhan-Kala in Chechnya, on the north bank of the Sunzha river. The site dates to the Middle Ages and is subject to continued archaeological investigation. It has been proposed that it should be identified as the location of medieval Maghas, the capital of Alania. Beyond the site itself, there are numerous burial mounds and other archaeological remains scattered along the northern bank of the river, but many of them have fallen victim to modern settlement and agriculture.
