The medieval site of Narovchat stretched from the confluence of the Moksha and Sheldais river to a ditch and earthwork wall protecting the peninsula from the west. The town, originally called Nurijan, was conquered and refounded by the Mongols as Mokhshi. In the 14th century it flourished, served as a mint, and on occasion hosted khan of the so-called Golden Horde. In 1395, however, it was sacked by Timur. Very little remains to be seen of the ruins today, since much of the site is covered by modern structures and agricultural fields; the easternmost end is overgrown with woods.
