Shanghai Exihibition Centre (Shanghai)

China / Schanghai / Shanghai / Yan'an Middle Road, 1000
exhibition centre, listed building / architectural heritage, 1955_construction

The present grandiose exhibition centre was built as a China-Soviet Friendship Mansion, being a pure sample of Stalin-era architecture style of the Soviet Union.

Before 1955, this was the site of 10,5-hectare Hardoon Gardens, a colonial-era fantasy estate built by one of Shanghai's richest foreigners, a Jewish millionaire Silas Hardoon. The present lush and shady paradise-like gardens between the building's long colonnades definitely carry the air of Silas' era.

  • Before being an exhibition centre, it was the China-Soviet Union Friendship Building, and way before that, it was the residence - called Hardoon Gardens - of Silas Hardoon, a Jew who was Shanghai's richest foreigner.
  • Vivian has made a small error. Citing from Frommer's Shanghai: Before 1955, this was the site of 10,5-hectare Hardoon Gardens, a colonial-era fantasy estate built by one of Shanghai's richest foreigners, a Jewish millionaire Silas Hardoon. The present house was built on the site of the gardens in 1955. The present lush paradise-like gardens between the building's long colonnades definitely carry the air of Silas' era.
