The botanical garden was created by the Kyiv University in 1839.
In 1935, it was named after the academician and botanist Oleksandr (Alexander) Fomin, who managed the garden for many years.

The garden's area is 22.5 hectares (0.225 km²), with 8,000 plant species, including 143 recorded in the Red Data Book of Ukraine.

The 30-meter high greenhouse, which was built for the largest and the oldest palm trees in Ukraine and Northern Eurasia, is among the highest in the world.
