"Annunciation" - country house church
At the same time it is a showpiece, from here the portal opens the church space. To the east of the three-storey façade construction, the tower rises two storeys above the building. Already in 1288 a church of the Minorites is mentioned here. The present building was built by the Linz master builder Johann Matthias Krinner from 1751 to 1758. The Minorites were founded by Francis of Assisi at the beginning of the 13th century. In Linz, the Order of the so-called "lesser brothers", whose members committed themselves to poverty, experienced a varied history.
The greatest turning point came from the Reformation: in 1551, the friars left the Linz Convention and did not return until 1669. In the meantime, the church was left to the Jesuits, who held services here from 1602 onwards. The adjacent to the church monastery was repealed in 1785 under Joseph II and converted into a government building. Today the Oö is in it. State Government, which is also the owner of the church. The church space is a unified Gesamtkunstwerk from the middle of the 18th century. Its expansion was promoted by the stalls: Johann Martin Schmidt, the famous Kremser Schmidt, was commissioned to paint four side altarpieces for the church.
Particularly masterfully, he shows the observers in the altarpiece of the cross altar the Christ's hour of death on the cross. Bartolomeo Altomonte painted the high altar picture "Annunciation of Mary". The stuccoer Kaspar Modler from Linz is responsible for the stucco and the altar designs. In 2009, the chancel of Herbert Friedl was refitted according to the impulses of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council. In the same year an organ was built. The Minoritenkirche presents itself as a spiritually and culturally inviting place with a busy concert life. The church rectorate holds the St. Peter Brotherhood, to which the church is assigned as a worship room.
