ruins, archaeological site, Roman Empire, Medieval / Middle Ages

The ruined site of an ancient city called Hadrianoupolis or Kaisareia Hadrianoupolis in honor of the Roman emperor Hadrian. The city thrived in the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, but was largely abandoned (apparently for nearby Kimistene to the northeast) during the Arab incursions into Anatolia in the 8th century. The ancient city was first part of Paphlagonia, then of Galatia, then Paphlagonia, and finally of Honorias.
