ruins, archaeological site, Roman Empire, Medieval / Middle Ages

An ancient and medieval settlement on the hill now called Asartepe. The identification of the site (mentioned by Strabo, but in relation to the Ilgaz mountains) is confirmed by an ancient inscription naming the temple on the akropolis as the sanctuary of Zeus Kimistenos. During the Arab incursions into Anatolia in the 8th century, the population of nearby Hadrianoupolis is believed to have sought shelter here. The akropolis features many finds from the 10th-12th centuries.
