St. Mary Magdalene Church (Kyiv)

The estate of the original light-yellow brick church building of Mary Magdalene bordered (at approximately the site of metro "Polytechnic Institute" now) with the university. The temple was built is the so-called “Russian-Byzantine” style – main dome with squat top, four angular turrets, temple's bell tower was accentuated by high a marquee. Vadim Katerynych, experienced military engineer, was in charge of St. Mary Magdalene Church construction. For the sake of the sacred cause, he refused to receive any money for his work. During April and August of 1935 the barbaric destruction of Kiev temples was going on, the church was disassembled brick by brick, and a school was built nearby. The school started working in September of that year.

Also, the church cemetery where university founders were buried has been demolished. Their graves were moved to the Luk'yanovske city cemetery. Prominent scientists, educators, public figures which shaped Kyiv Polytechnic University by their enthusiastic work were buried there. These are such professors as: Ermakov V.P., Konovalov M.I., Yerchenko P.F., Kobelev A.V., Votchal E.P., Pimonenko M.K., Dynnyk O.M., Solsky S.M. and others.
