Maria Pócs Altar (Vienna)

Austria / Wien / Vienna / Stephansplatz, 3

The Maria Pócs Altar with the Oexl Baldachin is on the southern side of St. Stephen's close to the west entrance. This baldachin dates from the early 16th century and is named after the master builder who created it, Jörg Öxl. The famous miracle-working Maria Pócs icon, which is said to have helped Prince Eugene of Savoy defeat the Turks in the Battle of Zenta, rests on the tabernacle. It was originally kept in Pócs, a place in northern Hungary (German Pötsch, Hungarian Máriapócs), and legend has it that it also shed tears. It was thus the object of much veneration, and Empress Eleonore Magdalene Therese had it brought to St. Stephen's in 1697.
