Santa Maria de Panissars

 ruines, Roman Empire (en)

Ruins of a medieval priory built in the meeting point of the old Via Augusta (S) and the old Via Domitia (N), where the roman general Pompei had built a trophei commemorating his victory in Hispania and where was established the "mansio" (station) at the Summum Pyrenaeum. This was the traditional way across the Pyrenées until the recent construction of the new way by Le Perthus (W). In this point the French army of Philipp III was defeated by the Catalan army of Peter II of Aragon in 1285. The priory and the remains of the Trophei were destroyed by Vauban in order to build the closer fortress of the Bellaguarda (fr. Bellegarde, i. e. "beautiful sight").
