archaeological site, Roman Empire, ancient ruins

The northwestern portion of the Roman fort of Bravoniacum has been discovered under a field just outside the modern buildings of Kirkby Thore. The southeastern portion of the fort has not been studied, as it lies under the modern Main Street and neighboring structures. The fort was surrounded by a more extensive civilian settlement (vicus). The perimeter is drawn in accordance with the Ordnance Survey Map. Most of the remains are obscured by modern agriculture, though some walls and structures are detectable in the relief.
The site is scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, Scheduled Monument number 1012183.
