Ruined remains of the medieval cathedral of Ardagh, located southeast of the modern church, in the corner of the graveyard. Excavations have shown that the early medieval stone church was built upon the foundations of an earlier timber church. By 1516 the church was in such a state of dilapidation, that mass was celebrated only occasionally, and the altar was exposed to the open sky above.
