castle ruins, archaeological site, motte-and-bailey castle, earthwork (archaeology)
The earthwork remains of the Norman motte-and-bailey castle of Loxeuth are located northeast of Ballymore on what was once a peninsula jutting into Lough Sewdy (hence the castle's name). The castle became the main stronghold of the de Lacy lords of Westmeath after the Irish destroyed the Killare castle to its east in 1187. After being abandoned by the early modern period, the castle was refortified twice in the 17th century. Most of the stone was stripped away to be used for other projects, like the local church.
