Nammireuksa is the head temple of the world sect of Mireu Buddhism, established in 1980 by Seon Buddhist monk Bubheung. For the next 30 years, many buildings were added and extensive landscaping, gardens and lotus ponds were established throughout the extensive temple grounds.
Today, the temple holds the largest seated bronze statue of the Buddha in Asia. From the Iljumun (gate) at the entrance to the main temple hall, there are over 500 Nahan (apostles, or saints who reached enlightenment through practice) Statues.
