The Ajanta (Ajintha) Caves, situated at a distance of 107 km north of Aurangabad, were excavated during different periods (circa. 2nd century B.C. to 6th century A.D.). The caves contain paintings and sculptures considered to be masterpieces of both "Buddhist religious art" and "universal pictorial art". The caves are located just outside the village of Ajinṭhā in Aurangabad District in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The caves attained the name from a nearby village named Ajintha located about 12 km.
