  This area used to be a run-down housing estate with several large blocks of flats, known as Ashfield Valley. In the early 1990's the Co-operative Retail Services bought the land and re-developed it, building a £30m new Head Office (since sold to Airtours/MyTravel/Thomas Cook etc!), a large "department" store (now a B&Q Warehouse) and leasing other units to Odeon Cinemas, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Fitness First, Copper Pot Indian restaurant, etc. CRS then "merged" back into the Co-op Wholesale Society, and although the United Co-operative built, and briefly occupied, a new office on the site, the Co-op curse struck again and they have merged with the Co-op Group (July '07).
