1801 a Quaker school for blacks was established on 350 acres on land given by Robert Pleasants to his slaves that he had freed and then hired them as paid laborers. Robert Plerasants founded the school to provide for their education. It was the first educational institution for free blacks in Virginia. 1930's the County of Henrico built a schoolhouse for the residents of the Gravel Hill community. A Rosenwald School on 5 acres and a 4 teacher schoolhouse. Total cost of school was $11,485 with $500 from Blacks, 9,785 from public and $1200 from Rosenwald. The school closed by 1970.
The building is now a community Center and has exhibits on the history of Gravel Hill.
