"Home of the Country Artist"
Nestled on the shores of Lake Massawippi at the Magog River outlet, to the west steep and wild Laurentian Mountains and to the east pastoral farms and verdant hills, this generous hamlet offers summer boating, winter cross-country skiing and year round enthusiasm, innovation and inspiration for the arts with resident writers, painting studios, crafts, pottery and musical repertoires and festivals of all kinds.

The lake itself offers excellent boating, fishing, cabins, sailing, and the annual Lake Massawippi Regatta launching from the boating club. A great view of events may be possible from a number of grand summer residences with gardened slopes stretching south to the border. Naturally, the town has its fair share of celebrities and recluses.

For the spiritually inclined, interesting church architecture welcomes Presbyterian-Catholic worship and Unitarian Universalists. There is also a Library with an historical archive.

North Hatley, located 15 kilometers from the Canada-U.S. border, lies just a half-day walk North from the historical heartland of the large and prosperous Iroquois Empire that once governed southern Ontario, Quebec, and New York with a foundation democracy. In the 1700's Captain Ebenezer Hovey risked his scalp and took possession of a large grant engulfing the lake and surrounding lands. Visiting the future site of North Hatley in 1886, a descendant of Chief Pocahontas' Clan fell under the spell of the lake. In the early 1900's, Captain Cate married a Mohawk Iroquoian and settled on the Wild West slope, establishing the annual Massawippi Regatta to ensure that visitors North and South of the border cherish this peaceful recreational village for all time.

Excepting heavy winter snows, a pleasant visit at Cafe Massawippi and a delightful stay at one of four Inns, including Manoir Hovey with five-star dining make North Hatley one of North America's best-loved country destinations. Just two hours drive from Montreal, yet hidden round hills, rivers and bends, a map or GPS is recommended.
