These houses were built so scientists could observe the effects of a nuclear blast on buildings. They were subjected to a 29 kiloton atmospheric shot. They were far enough from ground zero to survive, but the house to the west had all of its paint burned off. The ground zero for this test is now the Transportation Incident Exercise Site about a mile and a half to the west.

  • The Apple-2 House also had a mock family of mannequins in the basement which performed a service akin to a crash test dummy. The husband mannequin had a 6 inch shard of glass sticking out of his back in the photo I saw. It wasn't paint which burnt off, but shingles.
