Initially, the camp was established on February 25, 2015, near Al-Hakimiya village, east of the Derik city, to accommodate Arab refugees from Iraq, but after the ISIS militant attack on Hasaka city in June 2015, it was decided to move the camp to this area near Gire Rash village, while expanding its capacity to receive refugees from the southern districts of Hasakah city, after which on June 26, the creation of a new camp began, and the first 170 tents were ready by July 3. By mid-2016, most Syrian families had returned from the camp to their homes, and the number of Iraqi refugees had grown to ~460 Arab families. Their living conditions in 2016-17 were complex, and the efforts of international humanitarian organizations were not enough to meet even basic needs.

At the end of October 2017, 221 of the 460 Iraqi Arab families living in the camp left the camp and returned to their homes in Iraq amid the improvement in the security situation after the territorial defeat of the "Daesh" (ISIS) terrorist organisation.

From mid-August to early October 2020, 179 families (564 people) from the different foreign nationalities were transported to the camp from the Al-Hol camp and housed in the isolated newly created northern section in order to reduce the level of violence in Al-Hol camp and disrupt coordination between radical ISIS women and prevent the spread of their propaganda.
