USCG Station Atlantic City has been in operation since 1849 when it was founded as a volunteer station utilizing a surfboat to conduct ocean rescue. Moving to various locations including the base of Abescon Lighthouse under the US Lifesaving Service, the present incarnation of the Station was established at this location in 1941.

The Station is crewed by 52 active duty men and women, 22 enlisted reservists and draws support from 5 Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas. Utilizing two 21ft SafeBoats, one 23ft SafeBoat, one 41ft Utility Boat (UTB) two 47ft Motor Life Boat (MLB), the station's area of responsibility covers approximately 250 square miles of ocean, backbays and inlets

Station Atlantic City also operates the seasonal small boat station at Great Egg, and together the units conduct approximately 400 search and rescue cases a year. Today, Station Atlantic City is part of the US Coast Guard's 5th District.
