Formed from the Whin Sill, a large-scale intrusion of igneous rock between softer sedimentary layers. The crags face Northeast, and are always rather cold and damp. Rock climbing does take place here in the summer, although there is a history of difficult access. The crags are dominated by vertical cracks, formed on joints which in turn were created by tension in the rock as it shrunk during cooling after intrusion. -Geograph.
