City with a population of 14,091 at the 2020 census. Capital of the state and county seat of Hughes County. Founded in 1880 opposite of Fort Pierre, for which it was named. Both are named for Pierre Chouteau, Jr., a French-Canadian fur trader. It was made the South Dakota capital in 1889 upon statehood because of its location at the center of the state.
