City with a population of 13,528 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Yankton County. First settled by the Yankton Native Americans, the first European-American exploration was made of the area in 1804 when the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through. It was opened for settlement in 1859 by treaty. The town that developed here was named Yankton after the local tribe. It served as the capital of the Dakota Territory from 1861 to 1883.
