Ajdna above Potoki

Slovenia / Gorenjska / Slovenski Javornik /
 archeological site, asylum (antiquity), hilltop

Ajdna, 1048 m, is a precipituous rocky outcrop above the Potoki village, near Jesenice. On the top is one of the most interesting Antique archeological sites in Slovenia. Due to conservation, some architectural remains can be seen in situ.

On the site the remains of some 20 houses, a church and a cistern can be seen. In the 5th and 6th century AD, when the Roman Empire collapsed, romanised people who had adopted Christianity, feared to continue living in lower areas. Rides of pagan Germanic and Slavic people were destroying almost all Roman towns and also Ajdna found its violent end some time in the 6th century.

Similarly as the similar site called Gradišče nad Bašljem, also Ajdna was partly revived at the beginning of the 9th century.

The summit is reachable from the north by two marked paths. On the shorter one there are a few exposed, but well protected passages, the longer one goes around and by the southern ridge on top. From the summit there's a nice view across the Gorenjska plane.
