Sv. Lovrenc above Bašelj

Slovenia / Gorenjska / Preddvor /
 archeological site, Roman Catholic church

On the altitude of 892 m, a little below the top of homonymous hill, there is a chuch, which was first mentioned already in 1157. It is devoted to St. Lawrence. The church was burnt in Turkish raids, later rebuilt and in 1682-88 renovated. The last renovation was in 1994. The present church has a Romanesque nave and a Gothic ribbed vaulted presbytery.

The area is also an archeologic site, supposedly together with the nearby Gradiščem above Bašelj in the Antiquity it was forming a unified entity.

Otherwise on the hill the archeologists found traces of a settlement which lived already in the iron age (Hallstatt period) and persisted till the Medieval periods. If you go above the church, even today you can see where a dry-stone wall was surrounding the settlement.
