The TUM is the only technical university in Bavaria. According to annual independent rankings (Spiegel, Focus), it is considered one of the best university in Germany, along with its local neighbor, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU).

The TUM was founded in 1868 as a polytechnical school by king Ludwig II and moved into the main building the same year. Renamed to technical university in 1970.

The inner city complex is one of the three main TU sites, the other two being the branch in Garching (mathematics, computer science) and the campus in Freising-Weihenstephan (forestry, dietetics, environmental science).
