As was indicated by Russian Air Force General Colonel Viktor Bondarev in late 2014, the Babruysk Air Base wil be in use by the Russian Air Force by 2016, to protect the common airspace of the Belarusian-Russian Union. The base is to be used by the Russian Air Force only and will probably be equipped with a regiment of 24 Sukhoi Su-27SM3 Flankers, as was planned by Russian Defence minister Shoigu. The choice of the base was made after rumours started to emerge that the Russian Air Force would use the Lida Air Base of Baranovichi Air Base further west. The rumours were false, although the Russian Air Force uses these Belarusian air bases with small flights of Su-27s to counterbalance the NATO activity in Lithuania and Estonia.
