Balakot (Urdu: بالاکوٹ), is a small city in Mansehra District in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan.Balakot is a (Tehsil)subdivision of Mansehra District and is The the main city of this area.Balakot is located on the river Kunhar, about thirty-eight kilometres in north-east of the city of Mansehra. It is a historic city, famous tourist destination of the region and the gateway to Kaghan valley of the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. The river Kunhar runs through the city and is one of the main reasons for the beauty of this area.The river Kunhar, originating from Lulusar lake runs through the city and merges with Jhelum River just outside Muzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir.
Balakot and other locations in AJK were particularly hard hit by the 8 October 2005 earthquake. Over 95,000 people lost their lives during this moment magnitude 7.6 temblor.
The city has been rebuilt with the assistance of Saudi Public Assistance.
