Located in the south western corner of the city, this area is also known as ''Mini Lucknow''.

This is the place where the world famous ''Kolkata Biryani'' was believed to be born in the kitchens of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah after he was exiled by the British from Lucknow to Metiabruj.

Metiabruj is predominantly Muslim in population.

It is also famous for being the largest kite manufacturer in the world.

It is bounded by the Hooghly to its north and west. Khidirpur Port and Garden Reach to its east and Akra Santoshpur to its south.

  • The Oldest Area of the Kolkata City. The Main population is over 400 years due to port area. the Port worker was residing in this area. This is a nice place where All Hindu and Muslims reside with BROTHERHOOD.

  • "Matia" means clay and "Bruz" is a sort of fortress.Wazid ali shah migrated here from Lucknow. River Ganges is lively here.
  • yes 'matia' means clay and 'bruz' means fortress but the clay fort of metiabruz was not build by wazid ali shah he came to this place after sepoy mutiny at 1856-1857 the so called clay fort was build by one of the generals (barbhuia) of jessor raj during mughal period to resist mughal general man singh and his troops.
