The Federal University of Bahia is the major university in Bahia. It provides 57 undergraduate concentrations, 82 post-graduate, and more than one hundred courses for non-matriculation. As indicated by its name, it is funded publicly and maintained by the federal government.

UFBA is one of the premiere universities in Brazil, having several campuses scattered throughout Salvador and Bahia in general. The old Agricultural Campus in Cruz de Almas was closed for the opening of the Federal University of Recôncavo Bahia (UFRB) meant to jumpstart development of the interior regions of the state.
