Vanhankaupunginlahti (Helsinki)

Finland / Uusimaa / Helsinki
 lake, water, nature preserve

Vanhankaupunginlahti (The bay of the Old City) is a bay area which together with parts of adjoining Viikki district constitute a natural conservation zone near downtown Helsinki in the southern part of Finland.

Yes, if you walk near the rocky beach and look at the nature surroundings, you may easily think this is a huge lake. Ducks, swans and other freshwater birds party in the huge reedy water area from spring to autumn. It's said the water in this area is indeed not salty.

(I have amended the translation of vanhakaupungilahti. The previous writer translated it as "lake like bay". It may have reminded him/her of a lake but he/she can´t go and change the names of our Finnish places as the fancy takes him!!!It is Old City Bay. The reason there are fresh water birds is because here the sea has a low salt content)
(I have restored name vanhakaupunginlahti. There are no (i can't find) translation "Bay" for word "Selkä")
