Ancient and medieval town and fortress, located just NE of the modern Turkish village of Sadak. At times Satala served as the base of the Roman legions XVI Flavia Firma and XV Apollinaris. It also sat astride an important route between the Black Sea region and the south, but declined in the Middle Ages.
