Original translation: Cafe Pelikan
Also known as: Pelican Cafe & Chocolate Shop
The Pelican House at 15 Schmied Alley is one of the most beautiful old town houses in St. Gallen. The magnificent oriel was built in 1707 by owner David Huber. The name Pelican has been occupied since 1733. The house was often changed in the 18th and 19th century by the owner and was repeatedly reconstructed, plastered, repaired and renovated. The beautiful magnificent oriel was honored in 1994 with the Erkerpreis, a St. Gallen award.
The bay window has six parapets. The four external parapets represent the four continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and America; Australia is missing. The four continents represent humanity. The pelican, which crowns the oriel, stands in a nest that is modeled after the crown of the thorn, and symbolizes the death of Christ. Angelic representations (winged heads) also point to the religious basic ideas. On the ground floor is a cafe/restaurant, it was opened 1993 by Christoph Kuhn. The cafe was then handed over to the current owners Manuela and Stefan Kölbener on August 17, 2010.
The historic Pelican House is worth visiting just because of its fascinating oriel. But of course the cozy cafe is also waiting for you. In addition to the classics, such as coffee and cakes, there is a wide selection of drinks as well as sweet and savory tastes. The small chocolate shop also offers all sorts of delicacies for you. Let yourself be seduced.
Every Sunday we have an extensive brunch buffet. On request, we can also offer you gluten-free bread. So that you do not have to wait, we recommend a pre-order. Between 8.30am-12.30pm only, reservation is recommended.
