This cemetery was established in 1891, in order to bury soldiers of Russian empire army. During the First World War this cemetery was abandoned. In 1923-1924 one lot was singled for fallen Lithuanian army soldiers.
When the war between Germany and Soviet Union broke in 1941 and the German army occupied Kaunas, the eastern part of this cemetery was used to bury fallen Wehrmacht troops. Soviet troops were buried in the northern part of this cemetery since 1944. During 1945-1953 and 1974-1983 this soldier cemetery was reconstructed in order to glorify the remembrance of fallen Soviet army. Also, in 1969 the monument to famous interwar Lithuania pilots Darius and Girėnas was erected. Currently, the cemeteries of Lithuanian, German and Soviet fallen troops and Darius and Girėnas monument are preserved by state.
