Built in 1456, Seobeakdang is historically very important as a head family house of the Gyeongju Son clan in which Son So (1433-1484) settled when he moved to Yangdong after marrying the only daughter of Ryu Bok-ha.

Seobeadang literary means "learning to be patient while writing the characters for meaning endurance, a hundred times." It was foretold that three great scholars would be born in this house, and that prophecy was fulfilled when Son Jung-don and Yi Eon-jeok, two great Confucian scholars, were born here. Son Jung-don was a son of Son So, and Yi Eon-jeok was a son of Son So's daughter.

Seobeakdang is Important Folklore Cultural Heritage #23.

Yangdong Folk Village (Yangdong Village of Gyeongju), a traditional village from the Joseon Dynasty, is listed by the South Korean government with UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and is designated Important Folklore Material #189.
