A 100% modern replica of one of the Beitang Forts. The Beitang Forts were originally built to ward off pirates in 1550, and heavily reinforced in the 19th Century to ward off Westerners. The Forts gained some fame when they fell to the French and British during the 1860 Second Opium War, a battle that opened the allies' way to Beijing. The original forts were demolished after the Boxer Rebellion and very little remains of them, the Nanying (South) Fort location was dug out to create the Yongding New River. The Beiying (North) Fort was located in what is now Sanhe Island.
This new Fort is not located on the original place (a smaller fort was there, though), and it is a rather curious example of touristical architecture.
