village, naturism
In 1931, Gaston and André Durville, both doctors, established Héliopolis, Europe's first town dedicated to naturism, on the island. The town was built on hillsides and is dominated by Fort Napoleon. The Bain de Diane and the Plage des Grottes (a nude beach) are reserved for naturists.
The isle has practically no transport, no street lighths (so the guests are advised to bring a torch); smoking is discouraged and utmost care should be taken in respect of open fire of any kind; pick up cigarette butts as the island's biggest terror is a fire.
Nudity is OBLIGATORY all along the seaside, from Cap Laisset in the North to beyond Bain de Diane in the South and on two naturist-only beaches - Bain de Diane (stony beach) and the plage des Grottes are reserved for naturists (the latter is the only sandy beach on the island and can be reached by taking from the village by taking the path on the left above the rocks; nudity is PERMITTED all over Heliopolis and the natural reserve, but it is FORBIDDEN around the city square and the market - this is the Eastern part of the city center. Nudity is permitted around (not in!) the Chapelle d'Heliopolis (the church), but, of course, one would be well advised not to hang around the church naked.
