Roman Empire, ancient ruins
Claudium Virunum was founded as the new Roman capital of the province of Noricum during the reign of the emperor Claudius I (41-54). As a regional center, it appears to have replaced the native settlement on the Magdalensberg nearby, which was possibly called Noreia or (also) Virunum. The Roman city has been subject to only partial excavation, and the amphitheater is the only part of the Roman ruins to be relatively fully uncovered and visible. Much of the site has been studied on the basis of aerial photography and surface survey.
