The medieval Russian town of Orlets was founded in 1342 as a stone fortress by the son of the posadnik of Novgorod. In 1397 it voluntarily submitted to Moscow, but was forced to surrender to a Novgorodian army in 1398. The town was subsequently destroyed, and for awhile its location was forgotten. Today a derivative of the name is applied to a town primarily across the river, Orletsy.
