This domed stadium was built for football (Detroit Lions) in 1975 (but also hosted the basketball team Detroit Pistons in the off-season from 1978-1988) as the "Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium" before becoming the Pontiac Silverdome.
The Silverdome hosted Wrestlemania III, 29 March 1987, in the main event Hulk Hogan successfully defended his title against André the Giant before a crowd of 93,173. This was considered to be the pinnacle of the '80s wrestling boom.
The Silverdome hosted the first indoor World Cup match in history, 18 June 1994, host U.S. and Switzerland drew 1-1. Switzerland's Georges Bregy scored the first indoor goal in World Cup history. The Silverdome would host three more group stage matches.
The Lions moved out (to Ford Field in downtown Detroit) after the 2001 season, and the city struggled to keep the stadium open, closing it in 2006. Sold at a pittance (not much more than just $500k) to a developer, the Silverdome briefly reopened for a few events before closing again. A drive-in movie theater operated in the parking lot for a few years in that time (2003-2006, 2010-2011). Finally went boom on 4 December 2017.

  • Just two days ago the Pontiac Silverdome was auctioned to a small Canadian realestate for a mare $0.54 million, it cost to build it $55.7 million in 1975. It was sold for less than 1% of what it cost to build. It tells you how much real estate has gone down in Detroit MI.
  • The Wrestlemania record stood until February 14, 2010 when the 2010 NBA All-Star Game broke the indoor sporting event record with an attendance of 108,713 at Cowboys Stadium
