Celles

France / Languedoc-Roussillon / Celles /

This tiny village was abandoned in 1970 because calculations indicated that it would be inundated by the artificial lake, the Salagou. As it turned out, the waterline stopped right at the village. It is now mostly in ruins, frequented by fishers and bathers who use beach-like areas of the red volcanic soil. A few of the original inhabitants visit occasionally to maintain what was once the Mairie.
