"ASHFORD, a small village and parish, on the north side of the estuary of the Taw, 2 miles W.N.W. of Barnstaple, has only 174 souls, and about 359 acres of land, successively held by the Beaumont, Bassett, Moore, and Bampfylde families. About 1815, the estate was sold in lots by Sir C. W. Bampfylde, and it now belongs to George Langdon, Esq., and a few smaller owners. The Church (St. Peter,) is an ancient fabric, with a tower and three bells. It is in good repair, and has a small organ." [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
