The site of the medieval town of Ukek, founded by the Mongols on the right (western) bank of the Volga in the 13th century. The city was sacked by Timur in 1395, but survived, as did its name, as Uvek. The site is located 10 km downstream from Saratov and hosts an annual festival ("A day in the life of the medieval city") the first Saturday of each September.
