At the lock in the Apeldoorns canal is a memorial with the following text:
On 16 april 1945 on this spot civilians of Dieren and Spankeren built a temporary bridge over the lock.
Units of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division and British troops of the 49th Polar Bear Division made contact over this bridge.
On this day Dieren and Spankeren were liberated of the German occupation and the road was open for the allied liberation of the Veluwe.
