Villarrica Volcano

Chile / Araucania / Villarrica /

One of the most active volcanos in Chile, and one of the most publicly accessible.
The volcano is currently active (2007) and puffs of steam are often seen rising above the summit, while an active crater with lava is visible even in the satellite image. Several companies in the nearby city of Pucon have guided tours which climb to the summit for ~35,000-45,000 pesos per person (equipment included). The most recent "big" eruption was in 1984, which produced a long lava flow to the north, which burrowed its way through glacier. There is a gravel road from Pucon to the northwest side where there is a ski facility (the base from which the guided tours start). The road shows a variety of volcanic deposits -- primarily lahar (mudflow) and tephra (layered ash) deposits.
