In 1990 the city of Rotterdam accepted the proposal of landscape architect Adrian Geuze for the redesign of Schouwburgplein and creating there urban open-air destination point. In it the "theatre square" is conceived as a podium raised 35 cm above street level and the lighting istalled in this space gave an effect of floating. The square is divided into 3 functional zones each with its own type of paving. The central and largest zone is finished in light metal so as to support more robust activity. The one to the east made of wood and rubber and works as the gathering space completed with pavements cafes and lit by four hydraulic light masts. The third zone of poured concrete levelled with epoxy is largerly in the shade.
