Monastery of the Holy Savior (Deir El Moukhalles) (Sarba)

Lebanon / Jabal Lubnan / Juniyah / Sarba
 church, monastery, Roman Catholic church

The Greek Catholic Monastery of the Holy Savior, located in Sarba, is a beautiful white stone building with arches and a nice churchyard. The Monastery is built upon a Mamluke-period citadel, which was constructed on the remains of a roman temple. The main monastery building sits on the 6-7 meter high walls of the Roman Temple, which was probably dedicated to the god Serapis. A bas-relief head of Apis, the Roman bull god, is located in the middle of the north wall. It is believed that the Roman temple probably had a subterranean passage through the cliff to the St. George's Grotto in Kaslik.
